Chamaedorea atrovirens, commonly known as the Mexican butterfly palm or the dark green bamboo palm, is a species of palm native to Mexico and Central America. It belongs to the family Arecaceae and is a popular plant for indoor or outdoor landscaping due to its attractive appearance and relatively low maintenance requirements. Chamaedorea atrovirens is a medium-sized palm that typically grows to a height of 3 to 10 feet (1 to 3 meters), although it can sometimes reach up to 20 feet (6 meters) in height in its natural habitat. It has slender, bamboo-like stems that are usually clustered together, forming dense clumps. The stems are dark green in color and have prominent leaf scars. The leaves are pinnately compound, meaning they are composed of multiple leaflets arranged along a central stem, and are typically 2 to 4 feet (60 to 120 cm) in length. The leaflets are dark green and glossy, with a graceful arching form that resembles the fronds of a butterfly, hence the common name "Mexican butterfly palm".
